National News
Thanks for visiting my site.

It could now be less than 7 weeks till Gordon Brown finally calls the General Election. We will be using the time to hold the Government to account and to campaign for the new policies which Warrington and the country now need so badly.

We must not permit Gordon Brown and his tired and ineffective Government  another 5 years.  Britain is a great country and Warrington is a great place to live. But things could be so much better.

We are campaigning hard and winning. Our membership has increased by over 50% in the last year. We have a very active Conservative Future Branch and younger members are especially welcome.

Best Wishes

David Mowat
Prospective MP
Warrington South

Warrington NHS and Childcare Survey:

During the second half of 2009 we have conducted the largest ever survey into health and childcare priorities in the constituency. Over 30,000 surveys were delivered and we have received about 3000 responses.  In summary,  the overall position is positive with a majority of residents rating both the hospital and the overall NHS as good or excellent.  Where issues exist we have taken them to the relevant Healthcare Managers.

Principal areas of concern are:

-Over 50% of residents who have tried to register with an NHS dentist in the last two years have found it "difficult or impossible".

-About 7% feel that their GP appointment is rushed.

-30%of residents have difficulty booking an appointment when required or convenient.

-Over 90% of residents are against the introduction of polyclinics unless accompanied by an upgrade in GP services.

-Over 20% of residents had difficulty accessing family planning services.

For a full analysis of results and also the health statistics for the town follow this link.  One issue that has become apparent in the follow up work to our survey is that while Warrington has slightly lower health outcomes than the average for England we also receive lower funding than the England average.  If we received the same as average we would be over £10m/year better off.......that is enough for  at least a 100 extra nurses and doctors.

I do not believe our current MP has fought for the town on this allocation in the way that many MP's do. If elected I will. Download Full Survey Results Here.

Update: We are pleased to report that the PCT plan to commission more NHS dentistry capacity in Lymm from 2010.

Mersey Gateway Bridge Toll:

The Government is now refusing to fund this critical piece of infrastructure for the North West. There is a proposal to finance the scheme with a toll which, according to traffic modelling will increase the flows through Warrington by up to 5-10%. This will impact Appleton, Great Sankey, Stockton Heath, Penketh and parts of Lymm. The town is already congested enough, we should not allow the Government to just dump more traffic here. Other parts of the country are having similar schemes funded. Ours should be too.

Over 3500 signatures have now been collected and were recently delivered to Shadow Minister of State for Transport Teresa Villiers. Sign Our Online Petition.

Update December 2nd: I have recently met with both the Project Director and the chief Executive of Halton. I impressed upon them how important it is for Warrington that any toll is kept as low as possible. There remains a risk that Halton will try to raise additional revenues through an even higher toll which will drive more traffic into Warrington.

Jobs on the Omega Site:

Update November 11th

Ministry of Justice confirm to David Mowat that Omega is not under consideration as a potential site for a new prison. He condemns local politicians who have scared residents for their own advantage.

Like nearly everybody else in Warrington I am delighted that after a campaign lasting over 6 months the Government has now decided to abandon plans for a massive 2,500 inmate Titan prison on the Omega Site. Local Conservatives were joined by William Hague in April in a final push to prevent Jack Straw going ahead. Congratulations also to members of the WRAPP group who have campaigned long and hard on this. Read More.

But a major problem remains. Little substantial has happened on the Omega Site for a decade and there seems to be no plans to drive forward the development. Until the Council begin to take seriously the need to make progress with developing a business park there will be a risk of a smaller prison or something equally unacceptable such as an incinerator. Keep fighting for jobs on Omega. We will.
