The Mersey Gateway

Mersey Gateway Bridge Toll:

The Government is now refusing to fund this critical piece of infrastructure for the North West. There is a proposal to finance the scheme with a toll which, according to traffic modelling will increase the flows through Warrington by up to 5-10%. This will impact Appleton, Great Sankey, Stockton Heath, Penketh and parts of Lymm. The town is already congested enough, we should not allow the Government to just dump more traffic here. Other parts of the country are having similar schemes funded. Ours should be too.

Over 3000 signatures have now been collected and were recently delivered to Shadow Minister of State for Transport Theresa Villiers. Sign Our Online Petition.

David Mowat has presented to the Planning inspector at the Public Enquiry which took place in Runcorn during May/June. It is crucial that if tolls are imposed they are as low as possible. This is not the current plan.   We are fighting to ensure that Warrington gets a better deal. Read More.

Plans to Divert Traffic Through Warrington to Avoid New Toll Bridge

We support the plans to build a new bridge over the Mersey in parallel with the existing blue bridge. However, we are shocked that the Government have failed to commit the funds and apparently plan to make the new and old bridges charge a toll. It is anticipated that the toll could be up to £2 a vehicle.

The consequence of this decision is to divert additional traffic through Warrington. Traffic modelling predicts up to 10% extra. This will impact residents in Appleton, Stretton, Lymm, Penketh and Great Sankey.

The cause is the Government plans to divert infrastructure spending over the next 3-4 years away from the North to pay for the Thames Gateway. It is now becoming clear that Warrington will become a major casualty.

We have so far collected nearly 4000 signatures. Please support our campaign.

The public enquiry starts in May. We will be representing the views of local residents and will keep you informed as to the way that this develops.
