Liam Fox Visits Warrington to Condemn Labour stance on Military ID

March 27th

Warrington Council has recently acted to correct a major problem being faced by serving soldiers. The issue is that while on active duty army personnel generally to do have access to their driving licence and passport. These are help by the Army for safekeeping. The only id that is available to them is their MOD id card, which has date of birth and photograph plainly displayed. The problem is that licensing authorities throughout the UK do not generally recognise the card as acceptable id for access to pubs and bars.

This has resulted in soldiers being turned away from Warrington promises sometimes days before going on active duty in Afghanistan.

Lance Reah, who lives in Latchford, has two sons in the Coldstream Guards, both currently deployed in Helmand Province Afghanistan. He was angered that Thomas was turned away by a number of Warrington establishments only days before going on active service.

Lance Reah says “this is not only a Warrington issue but it is also happening right across the country. It makes me very angry……I am pleased that my local Council have acted but this is still a problem across the country…”

David Mowat says “when this was brought to the attention of the Council they acted to sort it out………but it is still a problem in the rest of the country……..it beggars belief that army personnel who have no means of id….because they are on active service……..are unable to go for a drink with their civilian friends……what kind of message does that give to young soldiers……..”

An Electioneering Budget

March 24th
Budget response: More stealth taxes on Warrington from Gordon Brown
Warrington Council Tax up by 90% since 1997

David Mowat today delivered hisverdict on the Budget, which sets out the Labour Government’s plans for taxes and public spending. David voiced his concern at the big tax rises concealed in the small print and the lack of a credible plan to deal with the massive level of public debt.

•    Income tax will increase by stealth for 30 million people, since both the basic and higher rate thresholds have been frozen. This will mean £96 a year more for a couple who both work. A single pensioner on an average income will be more than £110 worse off as a result of Labour’s tax grabs.
•    National Insurance will be hiked for workers and for firms. This jobs tax will discourage businesses from hiring staff, cut people’s pay packets, and mean anyone earning £20,000 a year or more will be worse off.
•    Duties on alcohol will rise by above inflation yet again. A new cider tax, in the form of a massive ten per cent rise in duties on all cider, will punish responsible drinkers.
•    Council tax bills in Warrington will hit £1369 from April – a rise of  90% since 1997. Across the country, council tax will rise by £1 billion.
•    Inheritance tax will rise by stealth, due to the decision to freeze thresholds at £325,000 for four years. This will mean more and more homes will be caught in the inheritance tax net. The burden of stamp duty is also rising.
•    Anyone with a fixed telephone line will have to pay for a new yearly phone tax.
•    Business rates will rise by £1 billion for local businesses across the country; a business rates revaluation will mean soaring bills for many struggling firms from this April.
•    The Government’s total debt is forecast to hit £1,406,000,000,000, equivalent to every person in Warrington owing £23,000 in debt. This will result in higher interest rates to pay for the higher state borrowing, meaning more expensive mortgages.

David Mowat said:
Our economy is still in trouble. People worry about their jobs, families see their incomes squeezed and many small firms cannot get the support they need from the banks, even though the Government bailed those banks out. Most people across Warrington feel worse off than they did five years ago. Gordon Brown is carrying on the same old policies of waste, stealth taxes and debt. We need change.

Travel chaos for Warrington's residents as Unite strikes hits family holidays

David Mowat slams industrial action and calls on Labour to stand up for travellers

David Mowat, Prospective MP for Warrington South this week expressed his disappointment at the strike action bythe Unite trade union, which will disrupt family holidays in the run up to Easter. The trade union is holding a total of seven days of strikes to disrupt British Airway's flights.

David Mowat is also calling on both the Labour MP and PPC for Warrington South to condemn the strike action, encourage British Airways staff to stand up to the strikers and cross the picket line, and for the Labour Party to stop taking money from Unite during the period of industrial unrest. Current MP Helen Southworth is one of the 108 Labour MPs who are members of the Unite Union and 59 of the current crop of Labour PPCs are also Unite members

In the three years since Gordon Brown became Prime Minister, Unite has spent more than £11 million of its members' money on boosting influence within the Labour Party. This extends from placing a key union operative inside 10 Downing Street to installing Unite activists and officials as Parliamentary candidates.

David Mowat said:

"Labour's union paymasters at Unite are determined to inflict travel misery on families across Warrington. It is very disappointing that they are going ahead with this unnecessary strike.

"Gordon Brown should do all he can to urge Unite – who are funding his General Election campaign – to call off the strike.Or he should stop taking their money. I call upon both the Current Labour MP and the Labour PPC to condemn this strike as well.

"People both in Warrington and across the whole country now face travel disruption due to Labour's new militant tendency, worsened by union barons who want to bring our railways to a standstill as well. Strike action could leave the country facing a serious transport meltdown."
