Runcorn Bridge Petition Presented to Hague and Villiers at Launch of Policy Commission.

January 30th

The Conservative Party has launched a Policy Commission to focus on Transport in the North. The Commission has been established by the Northern Board to identify the transport priorities for the North of England of a Conservative Government.

Launching the Commission in Leeds, William Hague, Chairman of the Northern Board, said:

“For eleven years of this Labour Government, we have had much talk about investment in the infrastructure of the North of England but little delivery. Only this month we had road widening schemes cancelled and plans for a High-Speed Rail line that stops halfway to the North. “very day I, and Conservatives across the North of England, hear people’s concerns about the transport system they have to contend with. My message is that this Commission gives them a real opportunity to inform policy by telling us what they want to see.

“The Conservative Party is determined to make the North of England’s transport network stronger because we know a stronger infrastructure makes for a stronger North.”

Everyone is invited to have their say on what they think is good and bad via the Commission’s website which launches today at www.transportinthenorth.com <http://www.transportinthenorth.com>

The Commission held it’s first meeting on January 31st in Leeds at which time Warrington Candidate , David Mowat spoke out against the plans for a toll to be imposed on both the old and new bridges at over the Mersey at Runcorn.

David says “The same week that plans to impose a toll on the existing bridge received the go ahead from Halton Council it is appropriate that I present a petition signed by nearly 3000 Warringtonians objecting to the increase in traffic which will result.”

“The increased traffic flows will affect Appleton, Stretton, Latchford, Penketh and parts of Lymm and it is not right that the town should be impacted in this way. We already have one of the worst traffic flows in the country, this will make it worse.”

“The new bridge over the Mersey is necessary and overdue, it should be paid for by the government in the same way as similar projects in other parts of the country. Instead, the Government is diverting the funding down to pay for the Thames Gateway Improvements. This is not right.”

Economic Priorities are Wrong:

More Borrowing Hits Savers. It does not solve the fundamental problem caused by Brown's Debt bubble. Mowat speaks to local Conservative group on the economy.

January 16th

Labour's tax and debt bombshells are taking Britain to the brink of bankruptcy.  Their answer to the debt crisis is yet more borrowing.  It's clear that the longer Labour are in power, the worse the economic situation will become.

The real challenge in this credit crunch is to get credit flowing again.  That is why we have proposed a £50 billion National Loan Guarantee Scheme to get lending going and protect jobs.

Conservative help for savers and pensioners
Savers have suffered from the necessary reductions in interest rates.  And pensioners have suffered from a decade of Gordon Brown's tax raids. So we are announcing today that the Government should, in its next Budget:

·       abolish income tax on savings for basic rate taxpayers;
·       raise the pensioners' personal allowance by £2,000 to £11,490.

We will pay for this by reducing the growth of Government spending in 2009 in Departments other than Health, Schools, Defence, and International Development to 1 per cent in real terms. This will save £5 billion - the same amount Labour think they can save in 2010/11 without affecting front-line services. We will introduce radical reform to Whitehall to improve financial accountability and entrench value for money.

Five Conservative measures to help victims of Gordon Brown's recession
We will:
·       Get credit flowing and save jobs with a £50bn National Loan Guarantee Scheme.
·       Freeze council tax for two years by cutting wasteful Government spending.
·       Reduce employment costs for small businesses by cutting National Insurance.
·       Get companies hiring again through a tax break for new jobs.
·       Help small businesses with cashflow by delaying VAT bills for six months.
And over the long term we will get the public finances back under control with an Office for Budget Responsibility so no Labour Government can ever bankrupt this country again.
